I am the founder of Portage Environmental consulting and partnered with my longtime colleague Myles Brown to deliver Canadians high quality environmental services. I have worked in fish and wildlife biology for 22 years holding many titles in that time, including management biologist, senior wildlife biologist, research biologist and fisheries research technician. I am very excited to be working as a consultant to assist clients in achieving their business goals while demonstrating the highest level of respect and consideration for the environment. With over two decades of experience as a fish and wildlife biologist, I've developed and used my skills primarily for provincial and federal governments in support of species and habitat management, allocation and recovery goals. I’ve been fortunate to work as a provincial Moose Lead in Alberta, I’ve conducted bear research while completing my Master’s degree in Ontario, I’ve solved high profile fisheries resource concerns in northern Ontario, and I’ve led the industrial referral process for oil and gas, electrical transmission, and forestry industries among others in several provinces. In this time, I've gained invaluable experience reviewing and designing mitigations and protection plans to address these industrial impacts on natural environments while working towards the shared goal of resource allocation and use. The depth and breadth of knowledge gained in various locations throughout Canada including work with Ducks Unlimited, Ontario Ministries, Alberta Ministries and a long stint working at the Harkness Research Station, one of Canada’s leading fisheries research institutes, has helped solidify my foundation as a biologist and led me to a point where I want to offer my skills to clients who are in need of such services.
In reflection, the positive working relationships I have cultivated stem from my passion for fish and wildlife but I’m remembered for my contagious positive attitude and vigorous approach to work, while striving to enjoy the work we do. In recent years, the attraction to communication and team building redirected my career to become the Senior Field Liaison for Canadian Nuclear Laboratories working on Canada’s largest environmental remediation project, the Port Hope Area Initiative. In this role I interface with community residents and contribute to our environmental compliance as the primary internal biologist on this environmental cleanup.
I’m extremely excited about Portage Environmental and the good work we can support and deliver. Through close connections with biologists and technicians across Canada we have the capacity to achieve your significant environmental milestones. Portage Environmental stemmed from our belief that our professional backgrounds are beneficial to Canadians, we believe we can help, and we have a strong desire to do so. Let’s do this together.
